Sparky is quite possibly the best definition of a glass cannon in Clash Royale. If you’re able to connect with Sparky, you’ll have no trouble taking out everything ahead of you (especially towers). But the trade off is that Sparky is quite easy to counter. Anything from Zap to Electro Wizard or damage spells can counter Sparky, so you have to learn how to play it well and know how to get around counters as best possible. In this article I’ll talk a bit about how to play Sparky, then we’ll get into three good decks featuring it!
How to Play Sparky
Like I said already, Sparky is a very easy troop to counter. Sparky’s attacks take a long time to charge up, but do insanely high damage in a large area when it hits. This means that any spell or troop that can reset Sparky’s attacks can counter it. In a 1v1 fight, Sparky is completely helpless against a troop like Electro Wizard that can constantly reset its attack timer.
Since it’s so easy to counter, playing Sparky is a risky play itself. If your opponent has Electro Wizard, Zap, Lighting, Rocket, or any other way to nullify/kill it, you’ll have to pivot into a different strategy. Secondary win cons are helpful in sparky decks because of this. And even if your opponent doesn’t have any hard counters for Sparky, it can still be hard to use correctly. You’ll want a tank in front of it as well as some spells/support troops to keep the area ahead of it clear. The end goal is to connect with a tower, and since it takes so long to fire, any troop is a massive distraction. Even something as trivial as the 1 elixir Skeletons can slow Sparky down significantly.
Be patient, play Sparky with proper support, and know when to pivot to an alternate strategy. There’s nothing worse than wasting the 6 elixir to cast Sparky only for it to get Electro Wizard spammed to death.
Sparky Deck 1
Cards:
- Goblin Giant (Evo)
- Zap (Evo)
- Sparky
- Mini P.E.K.K.A.
- Dark Prince
- Mother Witch
- Minions
- Vines
This is the most popular Sparky deck type. Sparky goes really well with a big tank in front of him, and Goblin Giant is largely considered the best one that also has the ability to defend itself (thanks to the Goblins). It’s even better these days with its evo making it spawn more goblins. Sparky’s slow fire speed makes it extremely vulnerable without support, so Goblin Giant and all the goblins it brings along is the perfect tank to pair with it.
To help keep Sparky and/or Goblin Giant safe, we have several strong support cards. Mother Witch turns swarms into her own and does respectable damage, so she’s always helpful as a support. Then Mini P.E.K.K.A. and Dark Prince are good for fighting with other troops and helping keep them away from Sparky. Mini P.E.K.K.A. is so good right now thanks to all the tanks running around, and I’m happy to use him as well. Minions is in almost all of the decks I use these days, even if they are easy to distract or counter. For spells, Vines is here as it is with every deck I would recommend right now, and I also have Zap as one of the evo cards. It’s just a cheap, easy to cycle card with a decent evo effect. You basically get two Zaps for one, so it helps clear the way a bit for Sparky and can clear higher-HP troops thanks to the double damage.
All Sparky decks are at least somewhat slow, since Sparky itself is. This one is pretty standard, utilizing the popular Goblin Giant, evolved Zap, and several brawler-type support troops. I would say that Zap’s nature makes it a little bit faster than the average Sparky deck, but still not a “fast” deck by any means.
Sparky Deck 2
Cards:
- Goblin Giant (Evo)
- Witch (Evo)
- Sparky
- Mini P.E.K.K.A.
- Dark Prince
- Heal Spirit
- Rage
- Vines
This deck isn’t all that much different from the first one, as both do feature Goblin Giant. However, the main difference here is the addition of evolved Witch and Rage. The goal here is the same as always with Sparky decks: play a big tank (Goblin Giant) and put Sparky behind it. Then use cards like Mini P.E.K.K.A. and Dark Prince to fight off anything that might get too close to Sparky. The evolved Witch is the biggest new addition, and she allows you to be a bit more aggressive with Sparky. She’s strong enough to hold off whatever might come at Sparky or in the other lane, so you don’t have to be as conscious of elixir when you have the evolution ready (although you should still be careful with it).
Rage is here to make this deck a bit faster overall. It speeds up Sparky’s attack time, which is game-changing. Plus, now that Rage has been buffed, it also damages enemy troops. So you can also use it to counter low-HP swarms when needed. Plus, using Rage on Goblin Giant, Witch, or even Dark Prince/Mini P.E.K.K.A. is always strong too. This deck has the potential to do a ton of damage, so it ends up being a lot of fun to play. Plus, it’s one of the easier decks to get 3-crown victories with.
As you would expect with a Rage deck, speed is key here. But Sparky is still slow, so you have to be careful. With Goblin Giant in front, an enraged Sparky can be a deadly weapon. However, if you misuse Rage and/or get caught without elixir, Sparky can end up useless and dead in seconds.
Sparky Deck 3
Cards:
- Lumberjack (Evo)
- Baby Dragon (Evo)
- Sparky
- Goblinstein
- Mega Minion
- Skeleton Army
- Arrows
- Tornado
If you thought the last deck was fast, this one is even more so. Lumberjack and Baby Dragon as the two evolutions is a dead giveaway for a high-speed deck. Lumberjack’s rage boost as well as his damage output make him a valuable companion for a troop as slow as Sparky, and the same for Baby Dragon. The Baby’s speed boost is awesome with Sparky, especially if you can then combo those with Lumberjack’s rage. You can quickly take the slow-rolling Sparky and give it a major speed boost if you play your cards right.
I’ve also included Goblinstein, which I think is really underrated. He’s a solid tank with the ranged “doctor” behind him, and the chain lightning damage from his Champion ability is incredible. It’s great for clearing out big waves, and the elixir cost of 5 isn’t really that bad either. Mega Minion is also here for fighting flying troops, then I have Skeleton Army for fighting tanks. Arrows is just a general damage spell, and Tornado is helpful for stacking up enemies for AOE effects. Baby Dragon, Goblinstein’s ability, and Arrows all benefit from Tornado stacking up targets.
This deck can be played fast in double elixir, but you should be fairly conservative with your elixir until then. The bright side is that the troops here aren’t super expensive so you can still afford to use them some. Goblinstein by itself can take out big waves, Baby Dragon is always a strong defender, and Skeleton Army is more than capable of clearing your side of the arena if they don’t get countered by a spell. If you’re looking to combine Sparky and speed, this is about as close as you’re gonna get.
